Dresden is not the first playground we would think about for its electronic scene. However, Cuthead, solid Uncanny Valley label member, seemed to reverse the trend a couple of years ago. He shared with us his best tips to dig fine records, chill out or take some drinks with friends around the city.
Dresden has got a beautiful surrounding land, the Sächsische Schweiz. That means „Switzerland of Saxony“ word for word. There are hundreds of little sandstone mountains with sheer rock walls, which make it look like the alps in a smaller format. It is always worth a visit, if you are around. The National Park Logo was also an inspiration for our Uncanny Valley label logo. It shows the river passing through this mountains. In summer there are also lot of little lakes for swimming close by Dresden.
„Altes Wettbüro“ is a small bar and club in the Newtown of Dresden. Especially in summer time it has a really nice garden to have a drink and also great food. This is also the place were we set up parties back in the days and most of the music scene met and got to know each other. I remember so many good nights in this place, even it is pretty small.
There is clearly one spot for that purpose, the Fat Fenders. It has a long tradition in selling records and came out of the first Hardwax branch in Dresden. The owners are great music enthusiasts, DJs and share a great taste in records. The selection covers house, techno, hiphop, drum n bass, dubstep, disco…
I think is always good to do something active and communicative to start a night, so maybe see some art or attend an event in an off location. There is always something special going on in Dresden in art, movie or sports
A friend of mine does the website banq.de, where you can check not only regular dates in clubs, but also special events and illegal parties.
I am not really sure what you mean by this question, but i think you looking for a place to get wild and crazy. A place where you leave at 12 o’clock the next day. I think the best place for that is the club „Sektor E“, which is a big venue in the industrial area of Dresden. The owners are spiral tribe influenced hardtechno enthusiasts, who did the wildest illegal parties over the last 15 years. The „Sektor E” is the place where they settled down after those crazy times and its open to different promoters and crews to do parties there. The interior is steel, industrial with a lot of well made details and good sound. We did a lot of label nights there and it always was big fun. There is also another project starting off, called „Objekt A“ which also looks promising.
There is one area in Dresden, where most of the nightlife and bars are located, the „Neustadt“. This area was not destroyed in the war, so here you find still classic architecture of the 19th century with small streets and cozy atmosphere. It was also the alternative neighbourhood in the former GDR, with a lot of artists and musicans living here. Today its more gentrified, but still a cool spot. There are always lots of people on the street and you surely find something to eat around here late at night. There are also some bars famous for a kind of after-hour culture. The people who don’t wanna go home when everything closes, meet here and go on till the late next morning.
There are also some hostels and cafes in the „Neustadt“. One of the oldest is the „Planwirtschaft“, always good for brunch. I would also recommend “Cafe Combo” or „Bon Voyage“ as well.
I really like the river Elbe in Dresden. It’s remarkable in comparison to other cities, that the buildings are not build close to the river, but leaving a large natural environment at the riversides. Really beautiful for a walk or cycling. There is also a big park (Alaunpark) really close to my flat and the Neustadt, where you can relax on Sundays and have some beers.
