What’s to do in the summer when everyone’s gone?

Go to the forrest or the parks. Amsterdammers are very active and they love to do sports outdoors. Sit outside have a drink somewhere. Or go to one of the unlimited festivals. I have heard the Netherland have 600 festivals each year and during the summer there must be 3-4 every weekend.

What’s the collective’s HQ when it comes to drinks?

It’s weird but I honestly couldnt say as I am not a big drinker myself. I think Cafe Belgique has a nice vibe and over 60 beers and has a daily dose of DJ’s even though the place is tiny.

Where can you find the best records in town?

Amsterdam is really crazy when it comes to records. My favourite shops are Red Light Records, Waxwell and Rush Hour. You can’t enter any of these without leaving with a smile and empty pockets. But we have heaps of shops. Worth checking out besides these are : Second Life, Record Mania, Record Friend and Concerto. And there are more. I have to admit I am usually too lazy to go all of these, I’ll get stuck in the bermuda triangle.

What can you do for a first date?

Haha it all depends. On the first date with my girlfriend I took her to the North. To NSDM there are two cool spots by the water looking back on Amsterdam, Cafe Noorderlicht and Plek. It’s kinda romantic up there. But it all depends of course. It’s a very strategic decision no? It already tells a story. There are nice restaurants as well.

Where can you lose your dignity?

Haha (again) in the Red Light Destrict. That’s what the tourists do on their stag do’s. It feels like a paralell universe there because at the same tiem lots of cool things like red light radio and red light records are there. But yeah somewhere between coffee shops and magic mushrooms it must be possible to look like a total fool.

A good address for brunch?

I am connected to a place called Drover’s Dog. There was one when I was living in the East and there is one where I live now in the South. Good coffee and a nice selection of food.

The best plan to chill on a Sunday?

Now seriously, if I have any rituals it is that my girlfriend and I go to a Yin Yoga class at 40Degrees Yoga (it’s on Overtoom). Especially if you had a rough weekend. The class is Sunday evening and the teacher is magic. Afterwards you always feel like newborn. And Yin Yoga is very slow. It’s like meditation. Well it is medition for the body and the mind.

Best view of the town?

I am a big fan of the public library, OBA next to the central station. The building is beautiful and you have a great view. Dont forget the buildings of the historic city usually are maximum 5 flights high. So everything above that will give you a grand view.

What do you miss the most?

If anything I miss my friends as they are all over the place but mostly in Berlin. I also miss hip stores with really cool stuff as you find them in London, Paris or New York. Amsterdam really has to catch up on that. Not sure why there are only so few really inspiring stores.

A local product?

I am not sure if Rush Hour or Red Light count? Let ‘s make a case for coffee shops then. I think it’s very strange that Coffee Shops are so unique to the Netherlands. I grew up with an alcoholic father, so I have a natural aversion against alcohol but it’s the most lethal and omnipresent drug of them all. On the other hand people can go to jail for the possesion of marihuana. That is really weird to me and you keep forgetting taht while you live here. But in Berlin for example I am really annoyed that every park is full with street dealers that destroy the vibe for family’s. Politics I guess. But that’s certainly something the world could learn from Amsterdam.
