At the beginning, both Richie Hawtin and Dubfire wanted to sign his debut release. When his first productions hit the scene a few years back with the track ‘Faded’, signed both on MINUS and SCI+TEC, Joran Van Pol expanded his fanbase and started to make a name in the techno scene.
These releases also allowed a rapid transition from the Studio 80 backroom to the big stages of Awakenings, Tomorrowland and Space Ibiza. Within just a few short years, Joran van Pol has put himself on the international map as a key part of the techno community.
What is the biggest moment of pride of your life?
Getting my Masters degree at the university and getting my first release on Minus.
Have you got a bedside book?
I’m currently reading “1984” by George Orwell.
Can you tell us the most shameful music you listen to in secret?
I don’t think there is any shame in listening to any music as it is all about taste, but people probably to expect that I listen to hiphop and drum&bass a lot. The production on some of those beats is next-level.
Which public artist / person, would you want to have around for dinner?
I think it would be interesting to have dinner with Elon Musk, just to find out what exactly makes him tick.
What are your worst “Random memories” from a party?
Probably Hobo ripping up my pants at Awakenings.
Have you got a bad joke (not funny) that you can share?
What do you call a guy with a rubber toe? ‘Roberto’.
Would you rather go to a concert or clubbing?
Both, it is such a different experience. When you go to a concert, you’re really there to experience the show for a few hours. In a club, it is about losing your sense of reality for the entire night.
What do you do well, apart from music?
I like to think I’m pretty good at playing Zelda on the Nintendo Switch.
Can you share three tracks which will never leave your DJ Bag?
This is a though one, because my music always rotates, records come and go and sometimes they come back.
What would you have done if you were not a musician?
I would be in consulting for organizational behaviour and change.
Have you benefited from your artist position at a party?
Well, there is the obvious advantage of being on the guest list, being able to hang around backstage and occasionally free drinks. I never want to ‘abuse’ my artist status.
If you had to be reincarnated as an animal?
Dolphin, because dolphins are awesome.
Any life advice?
Don’t rely too much on others, nobody is going to do the work for you and help will be limited. Find your own strength and use it.
What is your most expensive vinyl?
I don’t know in terms of money, but a vinyl that is very valuable to me is the limited edition of Sonic Highway, which I produced together with Joris Voorn.
Can you share the biggest succession of after-parties?
Anyone who knows me personally knows that I am not an after-party-warrior, but if you’re asking what my longest party-marathon was, probably 48 hours straight during Amsterdam Dance Event.
Finally, what was your first vinyl purchase?
PPK – “Resurrection”.
