On Thursday 8th June, Hard Life attended Gorillaz last minute warm-up show ahead of their ‘Demon Dayz’ festival at Margate’s Dreamland and a worldwide stadium tour. Beginning promptly at 8pm Damon Albarn accompanied by full band and 6 piece choir seemed giddy to be back on stage after an extensive live hiatus.
“I love this band, this is my family” he proclaimed following a brief speech regarding election night. The band (and extensive family) included multiple drummers and guitarists a 6 piece choir and an obscene amount of guest artists making appearances throughout the 2 hour show. Show-stopping rappers and singers (old and new) included Vince Staples, Popcaan, De La Soul, Zebra Katz, Kali Uchis, Kano, Shaun Ryder, Jamie Principle and Jehnny Beth. In addition to these the likes of Pusha T, D.R.A.M, Mavis Staples, Danny Brown and Bobby Womack were seen on screen throughout the infamous visual element to any Gorillaz show.
Albarn and his band made their way through hits from 5 of their albums reaching into the back catalogue to play fan favourites such as ‘Feel Good Inc.’ and ‘Dirty Harry’ as well as premiering 2 unreleased songs.
But the most exciting part of the night saw American rap prodigy Vince Staples and grime veteran Kano freestyle head to head on an extended version of Gorillaz hit song ‘Clint Eastwood’. If this was the process of working out kinks in a live show than anyone attending dates of the tour should be very excited. Whilst the ‘Demon Dayz’ festival sold out instantaneously an extra date has been added at the London O2 due to demand.
